In this post I will explore different business model examples translating their terminology from English to Spanish and providing real-world examples to illustrate their effectiveness.
Although the most type of business model terminology can be used with the same word both in English and Spanish, there are some words that change completely and we refer to them using a different name.
So, if you are dealing with Spanish or Latin American companies, or you have in mind to set up a business in a Spanish-speaking country and need to create a business model but you are wondering which one would be the right fit for you, read this post.

Understanding business models examples in Spanish language
Understanding business models is essential for anyone seeking to navigate the complex world of entrepreneurship. A business model outlines how a company creates, delivers and captures value; it serves as a blueprint for how a business functions and generates revenue.
However, it becomes more complex as you are dealing with companies from a foreign country, with a different language, and with different cultural values and business culture. Because of this, a deeper comprehension of these models is necessary.
You will find 4 different types of business model translations:
- Copy and paste (same English word): Freemium model > Modelo Freemium.
- Phonetic adaptation: Franchise > Franquicia.
- Completely different: Crowfunding > Microfinanciación, financiación colectiva.
- A mix of 2 an 3: Subscription model > Modelo de suscripción or Modelo de Mecenazgo.
As you can guess, I skipped the first group because is the same word both in English and Spanish. Easy for you.
And I just selected the most common business model examples. This way I ensure that both business models exist in both languages.
Franchise business or Franquicia
Franchising (Franquicia) or Franchise business model is popular business model that allows successful businesses to expand their reach to new countries enabling individuals (franquiciado) to operate a business under established brand by purchasing rights from franchisor (franquiciador).
Ejemplos de Franquicias
Maybe the most successful franchise model is McDonald’s, which has a presence in numerous countries.
In Spain, for example, brands like Eroski and Día exemplify successful franchising within the supermarket sector. These supermarkets have franquicias in countries like Spanish, France, Andorra, Brazil, Argentina or Portugal.
Crowdfunding or Microfinanciación
Crowdfunding has revolutionized how startup business and entrepreneurs secure funding (financiación). This business model enables individuals (or groups) to pool resources to support a project or venture they believe in.
Through platforms (like Kickstarter or Patreon), creators can present their ideas to potential backers who can contribute financially. However, in return, backers may receive rewards (such as early access to products) or other incentives.
Although this system fosters creativity, it can also lead to challenges for creators, because they must continually engage their audience.
Ejemplo de Microfinanciación colombiana
If you want a good successful business model based on microfinanciación, take a look to what did Diana Uribe after raising over 50 million Colombian pesos: Casa de la Historia, a platform that provides historical content and insights.
E-Learning or Aprendizaje en línea
The e-learning business model has gained significant traction in recent years. It focuses on delivering educational content through digital platforms.
This business model involves various formats: online courses, webinars, podcast and other digital resources (buena escalabilidad), and it eliminates geographical barriers making education accessible to a broader audience (te puedes dirigir a estudiantes de todo el mundo).
Ejemplos de modelos de negocios de aprendizaje en línea en la enseñanza de idiomas
This is business model in which I have focusing these last years. All my language teaching business such as Learn Spanish Beginner (online Spanish lessons for A1-A2 levels), Podcasts ELE (podcasting training to Spanish teaching companies), Aprueba el DELE (online Spanish lessons to pass DELE exam), SergioDelgado.online (consulting services to language teachers interested in setting up their business online) and now Spanish to make money.
I just focused on language teaching area but this model may fit to other areas in which you can find students interested in taking your specialized training.
Memberships (Membresías) or Subscription business model (Modelo de suscripción)
Membership models or subscription business model have gained significant traction, especially in this digital age.
Businesses utilizing this model charge customers a recurring fee (pago recurrente) for access to products or services. Although some may argue against the sustainability of such models, they continue to thrive. This is primarily because they provide a steady revenue stream (ingresos recurrentes), which can be advantageous for companies aiming for growth. But, challenges remain, including customer retention (retención del cliente) and competition.
Memberships can take various forms, from monthly subscriptions (suscripción mensual) to annual fees (suscripción anual) and is prevalent in industries like entertainment, fitness and education.
El modelo de membresía más rentable de Latinoamérica
Platzi has became in the most profitable e-learning and subscription-based business of Latin America. It provides professional development courses through subscription services.
Peer-to-Peer Models o Modelo de igual a igual
Peer-to-peer (P2P) models facilitate direct interactions between consumers mediated by technology. This model allows individuals to exchange goods or services without the need for traditional intermediaries.
P2P platforms which leverage technology to connect users, enabling them to share resources and collaborate. This model has gained a popularity in various sectors: including accommodation, transportation and finance.
Un buen ejemplo de modelo P2P para comprar y alquilar pisos en España
Idealista.com is a prominent platform in Spain that allows consumers to list properties for rent or sale; this connects them directly with potential tenants or buyers.
Razor and Blade Model (Bait and Hook) or Modelo posventa (Cebo y Anzuelo)
Blade business model (also referred to as the bait-and-hook model) represents a strategic approach: a product is offered at low initial cost to entice customers to buy complementary goods.
For instance, consider the razor market: companies sell razors at minimal prices to entice customers to buy replacement blades regularly. This creates a continual revenue stream from the sale of consumables.
Other examples such as printers illustrate a scenario where the initial device is often affordable, but the ink cartridges are priced at a premium. In addition, coffee machines that require specific pods contribute to this model.
Long Tail Business Models o Modelo de Cola Larga
Long tail business models focus on selling wide variety of niche products that may not have high demand individually; however, collectively they can generate significant revenue.
This model capitalizes on the idea that there is market for less popular items, especially in online environment.
Ejemplos de Cola Larga en el mundo de la enseñanza del español
A good type and examples of this business model are libraries that sell language learning books. This kind of books will never been considerated as «Best-sellers», but the providers know that there is enough audience to be profitable.
An existing business model that involves Spanish as a foreign language books is Editorial Difusión.
Affiliate Marketing or Márquetin de afiliados
Affiliate business is performance-based business model where individuals (afiliados) earn commissions although by promoting a company’s products or services. This model leverages existing customers to reach new audiences; however, it creates a win-win situation for both parties.
Affiliates often share products through their networks, social media, or blogs: they earn a percentage of sales generated through referral links (enlaces de afiliados). This method is cost-effective for businesses 1, however, they only pay for successful conversions.
Ejemplo de modelo de márqueting de afiliados español en las redes sociales
Metricool is a Spanish digital Swiss Army Knife for social media managers. More than 2 millon professionals, agencies and brand use Metricool as their one-stop shop for social media and online ad management.
And yes, you can become an afiliado of Metricool and recerive money each time you give them a new user.
Retail (Venta al por menor o negocios minoristas) and Wholesale (Venta al por mayor or negocios mayoristas)
The retail wholesale business models represent two sides of the distribution spectrum. Retail involves selling products directly to consumers (B2C, Venta al cliente final), as wholesale focuses on selling large quantities to other businesses (B2B o Venta a empresas).
This distinction is critical, because it shapes the strategies employed by each model. Although both aim to facilitate the flow of goods, they operate under different principles and objectives.
Dos ejemplos de modelos minoristas y mayoristas
Zara is a Spanish fashion retail subsidiary of the Spanish multinational fashion design, manufacturing, and retailing group Inditex. Zara sells clothing, accessories, beauty products and perfumes following B2C strategies.
By the contrast, El Corte Inglés (although it has also a part of retailing model) is mainly un negocio mayorista.
Emerging and new business models: SaaS, Dropshipping, Freemium business model and More
As I told you at the beginning of the post, I have not included those business model examples that have the exact word both in English and Spanish.
I do not say that in the future, as happened with the other business models names, it change to a new name due to a phonetical adaption in Spanish or a literal translation, but at this moment we use the same word in English: SaaS, Dropshipping, Modelo Freemium, Leasing… etc.
